Course Descriptions:
This course will teach the massage professional about working with those who have been diagnosed with an oncologic medical condition so they may safely apply the appropriate massage techniques to a client referred by a health care provider. Students will be given an overview of oncology care including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy as well as the side effects of these treatments, and how they may affect massage therapy programming. In addition, students will learn how to modify a treatment session and adjust their massage techniques for clients who have undergone surgery or who have been diagnosed with cancer. Upon completion, the student will have the confidence and skill to provide relief from the symptoms most commonly experienced by clients who have been diagnosed with an oncologic medical condition.
Learning Objectives:
– Identify the anatomical structures (bony landmarks and muscles) as they apply to the oncologic client.
– Understand the typical signs and symptoms of a client undergoing oncology treatment including lymphedema.
-Recognize how cancer treatment can affect the body and understand how to modify massage techniques safely and appropriately depending on the client’s oncologic stage.
– Understand the indications for using medical massage protocols and the potential contraindications for massage application for the oncologic client.
– Choose the proper massage techniques in relation to the client’s oncologic stage and their presenting complaints.
– Determine the efficacy of the medical massage treatment provided to the oncologic client and be able to recognize when referral of a client to another health care provider is necessary.
